Married to Methyl Mercury

The Story behind the Work

I began this work in response to the impending ecological destruction of Lake Melville due to methyl mercury poisoning in late 2019. Before the pandemic and the colonial decision by the provincial government to flood Lake Melville and continue with the Muskrat Falls development.

Ecological grief (or eco-grief), also known as climate grief, refers to the sense of loss that arises from experiencing or learning about environmental destruction or climate change. This is the core of what drives me in the creation of MARRIED to METHYL MERCURY. My personal grief of entrenched colonialism, capitalism and continued destruction of ecosystems of which we are a part. A lament to the beauty we are destroying, ourselves in the process as well.
