SOCIAL PRACTICE - Mending Factory

Matilda Mendit (Kelly Bruton) Matilda is a former factory garment worker for GWG. In 2004, the Alberta plant

was purchased by Levis and moved south to Mexico. After the death of her husband in an oilfield industrial accident , she moved back to home, to Newfoundland.

Matilda is a fictional character created for performance.

The Mending Factory (est. 2019) is a mobile, slow movement, participatory “factory” designed to engage in dialogue with the public about our overconsumption of clothing and its impact on our environment. It provides an open space for people to connect and talk about linking local concerns to global supply systems. Learn from one another how to make systemic change. Learn useful textile skills and have fun. Connect.

These participatory actions of making and mending are metaphors for examining and taking apart systems (deconstructing),to fixing and changing supply chains (reconstructing). I am using this performance-based work to learn, communicate and share my concern about local and global environmental disasters with others while sharing simple useful textile knowledge and skills. Repairing the social fabric, building community one workshop at a time.
